For the first time since 1999, three quarterbacks have been selected with the first three picks.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially selected former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, as expected. The New York Jets went with their expected selection in former BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. Finally, the San Francisco 49ers went with former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance at three.
Lawrence has been the number one player in every stop he has made since he walked into high school. He was a lock to be selected one since Jacksonville clinched the number one pick at the conclusion of the 2020 regular season.
Time will tell now if the best prospect since Andrew Luck can transform the Jaguars back into their 2017 AFC Championship Game form.
Wilson comes into New York as the replacement for 2018 first round pick Sam Darnold. After not appearing on any draft boards heading into 2020, Wilson began to generate first round hype after a productive junior season for the Cougars.
Wilson is absolutely talented, but fans will have to wait and see if he is the real deal, or simply a one year wonder. And of course, he’ll have to deal with that New York media.
Lance comes from FCS powerhouse North Dakota state. After a redshirt freshman season that saw him produce 42 touchdowns, 0 turnovers, and an undefeated national championship finish.
He’s extremely raw and he desperately needs reps, but he has perhaps the most physical talent of any of the quarterback prospects in this class. He can come in and play right away or sit behind Jimmy Garrappolo until head coach Kyle Shannahan decides he is ready.
The numbers will show that all of these quarterbacks will not be Pro-Bowl level players, or even quality starters. Look back to 1999. Only second pick Donovan McNabb was a high level starter. Both first pick Tim Couch and third pick Akili Smith were major busts in the NFL.
But I’m sure that all three teams are extremely happy with their selections. This quarterback class is as deep as the come and look for all of them to have some type of success.
