EPL Unfiltered: Week 19

Sixteen teams played on Boxing Day. The rest played on Friday. So there are no games on Saturday. 6 games are to be played on Sunday. Let’s get into it.

Sunday, 12/29/24

Leicester City v Manchester City9:30am EST

Here we are again. Another CIty match day. Boy oh boy, I can’t wait! I am sitting here once again asking why Manchester City, the team that has one win in their last nine in the Premier League, are the favorites to win this match. Leicester sit 19th in the league with 14 points. They just lost to the leaders, Liverpool, on Thursday by 3-1. I was not happy when they walked through the Championship last season to earn promotion. They bought the scrubs from the top 6 teams in the prem to boost their squad to get them back to Premier League levels. It did not work. Oliver Skipp and Harry Winks will not save you. And it is showing. Their attack stinks, their goalkeeping stinks, and quite frankly, I don’t like them. But don’t be surprised if Jamie Vardy is on hat-trick watch by the first 45 whistle. That’s just how these games are going for City at the moment. As for City, I don’t know man.

Everton v Nottingham Forest10:00am EST

Everton has had Forest’s number in their last 4 matches against each other. Everton has taken 8 points out of a possible 12 in those matchups. So the history backs Everton in this game. Everton is coming off a great performance against a bad City side after a 1-1 draw. And Forest just snuck a 1-0 against Tottenham on Thursday, which gave them some breathing room in 4th place in the table. This game will probably be a defensive chess match between the two sides, so I am predicting a low scoring game, with Forest dominating possession of the ball with some occasional Everton counter attacks.

Tottenham v Wolves10:00am EST

This match right here may be the worst way to spend your morning. I would rather watch the Saudi League than watch these two dumpster fires attempt to play football. And the Saudi league plays zero defense. Real ball knowers watch ball for the defense. Just put the over down for me and do some chores around the house.

West Ham v Liverpool12:15pm EST

Liverpool have a chance to create a nine point gap between them and 2nd place Arsenal. Now this West Ham side doesn’t go down without a fight. The question is: Will tomorrow be one of those games they don’t go down without a fight? Being 6-5-7 on the season doesn’t seem very convincing to me. I really don’t know what West Ham’s problem is. Other than the team needing a young goal scorer, the team overall is pretty decent. They should be performing better than they are at the moment. They need help during this January transfer window. But they have to host the league leaders first before they can bring in some help. It should be a very entertaining match. I am expecting a Liverpool win with a low amount of goals. Liverpool are the best defensive club in the league and West Ham struggle to score, only bagging 23 this season compared to Liverpool’s 40. To put it in perspective, Wolves are sitting in 17th place with 29 goals scored. West Ham are 13th. I hate to say it but Arsenal may be the only team to challenge Liverpool this year.

Monday, 12/30/24

Manchester United v Newcastle United – 3:00pm

Only one game worth mentioning for this Monday slate if I am being honest. This fixture every season is always great. A rising club that seems to be hitting their stride as of late against an old “giant” that is still hanging onto things that happened decades ago. I said this previously, Ruben Amorim is not here to save your season, Manchester United. He was dealt the same exact hand that previous manager Erik ten Haag built. This team is embarrassing. Other than beating a club in the mud in Manchester City on 12/15, this season is nothing special. The new manager has outed their 27 year old “star boy” and their only playmaker, Bruno Fernandes, is suspended after getting a red card in United’s loss to Wolves on Thursday. United is 6-4-8 on the season and I do not see it getting better. Especially not against this Newcastle side. Give me Newcastle.
