The Reese Family: Where Competition Breeds Excellence
You’re probably familiar with the Manning family, the Barber twins, and the dynamic Wilson brothers (wow). But chances are, you haven’t heard of the Reese siblings—let me introduce you to them.
A massive brother-sister duo that averages at about 6’6, with the towering Julian (JuJu) Reese standing at 6’9 and averaging 9.1 rebounds per game for his senior campaign at University of Maryland that has also seen career highs in his field goal and free throw percentage. Angel herself averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 boards a game in her rookie year for the Chicago Sky claims JuJu is not as shifty as her, but gives him credit for being shifty at his size.
It’s not a surprise that these two are getting it done at some of the highest levels of basketball having been lifelong competitors growing up playing against each other in the driveway. Their mother, who carries the same name as Angel, was recently inducted into the UMBC athletics hall of fame and had her jersey number 10 retired for her 4-year contribution to the athletic program, and is often credited for pushing the two siblings to play basketball at a high level.
JuJu is balling out at Maryland in his senior season, most recently scoring 14 points and adding 8 rebounds in a victory against number 17 ranked Wisconsin. Playing alongside freshman phenom and former 5 star center, Derik Queen, the two form a menacing duo in the front-court averaging a combined 28.7 points, and 17.4 rebounds per game, the most boards for any duo in the Big Ten. JuJu may not be on NBA scouts’ radar due to his lack of 3 point shooting, but I would keep an eye on how he plays with the NCAA tournament rapidly approaching, as the Terrapins look to improve on an impressive 17-5 record with the help of some recent momentum, having won 6 out of their last 7 games.
Angel herself is enjoying success of her own in the WNBA, having finished as runner up for the rookie of the year award to some girl from Iowa named Caitlin Clark. Jokes aside, Angel is undeniably impacting the WNBA in her own unique fashion as being the rebounder/defensive enforcer that starkly contracts from Caitlin’s who commonly has the ball in her hands to make plays in the pick and roll, often shooting between half-court territory and the three-point line. Angel’s presence on the glass is unprecedented, having broken the rookie record with 24 double-doubles (points and rebounds), and became the first player in WNBA history with 3 straight 20 rebound games. The Sky are going through a rebuilding stage, going 13-27 in 2024, and not having a winning record since the 2022 season, but with the 3rd overall pick in the draft this year they’re in position to give Angel some much-needed help.
In conclusion, the Reese siblings are proving that family competition breeds excellence. With JuJu’s sensational senior season at Maryland and Angel’s legacy having just begun in the WNBA, it’s clear that their drive and passion for basketball are deeply rooted. From their early days battling it out in the driveway to their respective successes on the court, the Reese siblings are a force to be reckoned with.
As JuJu aims for a strong finish to his college career and Angel continues to make waves in the pros, one thing is for certain: the Reese family legacy is just getting started. Keep an eye on them—they’re not done yet.
